05 Oct 10 Twitter’s CEO Steps Down From Top Tweet Spot

Ayinde O. Chase – AHN News Editor

San Francisco, CA, United States (AHN) – Evan Williams, the co-founder and chief executive officer of Twitter, has announced he is stepping down from his post as CEO immediately. Dick Costolo, Twitter’s chief operating officer, will be Twitter’s CEO.

Costolo joined Twitter in September 2009. He is the former CEO of Feedburner, which was acquired by Google. He also served as the former group product manager at Google.

Williams became the firm’s CEO when co-founder Jack Dorsey left the company.

Williams plans on remaining with the company but wants his efforts to be focused on product development.

In a posting on Twitter’s blog, Williams said, “When I insisted on bringing Dick into the COO role a year ago, I got a lot of questions from my board. But I knew Dick would be a strong complement to me, and this has proven to be the case. During his year at Twitter, he has been a critical leader in devising and executing our revenue efforts, while simultaneously and effectively making the trains run on time in the office.”

He went on to say, “Given Dick’s track record as a three-time successful CEO, I’m confident we can make this a smooth transition.”

During Williams’ time as CEO, Twitter has gone from 20 employees to 300. It has also gone from having from 3 million registered users to more than 165 million, and from 1.25 million Tweets per day to 90 million today.
